This is a loophole so huge it could render all attempts at ethics enforcement meaningless. It allows the legislator to create his own exemption to the law.

Senator Reid has become more annoying as the years roll by. Yes, elections are one way to ensure new people with fresh ideas to represent us. However, Harry has forgotten that, similar to elections, the people have another tool to deal with those who have become entrenched in their position - recall.

First, this is one reason why government unions should be outlawed. I don't think the inquest should have been changed, it was a fact finding process to see if the officer used good judgment in shooting someone, if they are ever found guilty the DA files charges immediately. If the families want to file a civil suit against the officer or metro, then they can cross examine the officer & let a jury decide.

How can a vote by an elected official be considered 'free speech'? It directly influences the lives of their constituents. I thought Justice Holmes covered that in his "Yelling fire in a crowded theatre" decision. The official’s free speech rights end when discussion of the matter is closed and a vote is called for. At that point he is no longer acting as an individual, but as a representative of the people and casting the vote in accordance to the rules for that elected body.
Therefore the "narrowly tailored to meet a compelling government interest." standards should not apply. Rather, what is in the best interest of the people being represented by the official should be the standard by which this case is judged.
Clearly it is not in the best interest of the people for their representative to direct taxpayers’ money to their friends pocket with their vote. If it's truly the best way to spend the taxpayers’ money; it should pass without that representative's vote anyway. If it can't pass without the conflict of interest, it can be assumed that it was not in the best interest of the people to begin with.
Of course, that's just my opinion. I don't receive $100K for speaking to groups of right-wing nut jobs bent on rewriting the Constitution to hand over our government to unregulated corporate giants (like 5 of the 9 SC Justices).
Looks like ethics and honest government take a back seat to greed once again.

I think this is a good thing. Wasn't one of the biggest problems with inquest was that it was one sided? That the "victim's" estate was not given a chance to conduct an adversarial investigation into the matter, leading to nothing more than a kangaroo court of sorts.

Personally, I don't think officers should have to testify multiple times, as anybody can be tripped up or find themselves the subject of an unfair cross based upon the choice of words used in 3 prior testimonies.

Let's just allow the civil suit to begin without the waste of time and money that is/was the coroner's inquest. Besides, with only 1 "unjustified" Metro shooting since the Civil War ended (or however the hell long its been), it sure didn't seem to accomplish much.

And it sure didn't seem to foster trust between the police and public... just saying

It would be nice to know which Republicans voted against the measure. If we are going to have earmarks we all want our share. However, I believe that the majority of americans recognize that earmarks are the vehicle used for reckless deficit run away spending.

Wake up! Another PR move by Boy Wonder to use in his TV ads when he runs for governor in four years or U.S. Senate next year.

Plus this gives the Dems (who have controlled the Assembly since 1985) another unfair advantage.

Here's why...This is just a way to keep the Democrats in control of campaign donations from groups that typically have to wait until the end of the election to donate because they know if they donate early to the GOP they will be held over a barrel by the like of Steve Whoresford and John "Firefighter" Ocescrewus.

How about getting all PUBLIC EMPLOY UNIONS to show us what they do with their members union dues? Remember that is OUR MONEY that pays the PUBLIC SECTOR UNION WORKERS, who in turn pay the union dues that end up going where???

The idea of electronic filing is good. But if a $1,000 donor is going to be outed in less than 96 hours of the donation guess what, they are going to be a lot less likely to give.

By the way the limit of reporting donations should be raised to $500+.

Public servants should make less than their private sector counter parts.One of the reasons is due to the ability to retire after 20 years of service for most positions. I generally have respect for our police officers but don't understand why I commonly see 5 or more police cars on low risk calls and then see them linger and chatting after the call is complete. These public servant unions need to be dismantled and these officers need to enforce all laws including illegal immigration enforcement. Why are they turning a blind eye to these tax evaders and how many of these illegal alien are registering for selective service as required by law.This 287g program is not the answer all,use all tools available to protect our citizens.

The city council in Sparks maade a big deal out of their taking a 7 1/2% pay cut. I have been told that they had taken a 8 % pay increase just before they took the cut. A net gain.
The Sparks Firemen took a true 7 1/2% permenent pay cut . They gave up all uniform pay, 2 delayed cost of living increases and an actual reduction to keep the city from cutting the staffing to an unsafe level.
